Craig,

Are you using developer toolchain from XCode? It looks like paths configuration on your system is pretty weird.
Also, how did you install Ruby? Is it system-wide or per-user (do you use sudo to install gems?)

My ordeal with kgio gem installation is now over; for others who might experience the same problem as I did on Mac OSX when upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard, just make sure your XCode is updated to latest compatible version, and go from there. I had to reinstall rvm, update macports, reinstall libraries that Macports installed, etc but I do not think those steps were necessary to resolve my issue - I believe it was mainly XCode install that solved my problem. Thanks to all for help and for teaching me what it means to "top-post" :-)
