Fwiw, I don't think rsync was ever a good match for maildirs because of stat() overhead. Strict maildir clients can be fast because they only do readdir() and compare names, avoiding syscall overhead of stat() for every single entry. AFAIK, rsync does not have a compare-name-only option. I set maildir_header_cache_verify=no in my muttrc for this reason.
